The Center for Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering (CBMEG) is a center of excellence at Unicamp that develops research in the fields of animal, plant, human and microorganism genetics, as well as projects in structural, functional and comparative genomics. It develops basic and applied research, activities related to education and technology transfer.

Among CBMEG's objectives are: to study the control of gene action in higher organisms, through genetic engineering techniques in Brazil; to study the molecular basis of genetic diseases; to produce new gene combinations aiming at increasing agricultural productivity and improving fermentation techniques; to promote the diffusion and application of its studies and research; to intensify the University's exchange with institutions in the country and abroad and to offer training at the technical, undergraduate and graduate levels.

WHO WE ARE
AND WHAT WE DO

With a qualified professional staff, the team is composed of researchers, professors linked to the Institute of Biology at Unicamp, biologists, laboratory technicians, as well as IT and administrative employees. The main objective of CBMEG is to perpetuate itself as a multidisciplinary center of research in genetics. So, our researchers and professors are accredited in different graduate courses at UNICAMP, such as the Graduation Programs in Genetics and Molecular Biology (Institute of Biology/Unicamp), in Plant Biology (Institute of Biology/Unicamp), in Medical Sciences (School of Medical Science/Unicamp) and in Internal Medicine (School of Medical Science/Unicamp).

The research and education activities developed by CBMEG have been of great importance for the consolidation of Molecular Biology in the University, with national and international repercussions, as demonstrated by the individual curricula of its members. It is worth mentioning that in the last 35 years CBMEG has reached a high scientific level by publishing Master Dissertations, Doctoral Theses, as well as articles in national and international scientific journals, besides the deposit of patents and the participation of its members in individual projects, network or thematic projects.

Furthermore, CBMEG has assumed a leadership role in multicenter projects, both in the academic environment and in the University-Industry interaction. In the academic field, partnerships can be observed between researchers from CBMEG and from other Units of the University itself, as well as between different Institutions. The stimulus for Technological Innovation occurs through the approach between researches carried out in CBMEG and companies in the private sector for the development and transference of technologies in the biotechnological area, as well as the programs "Innovative Research in Small Companies" (PIPE) and "Partnership for Technological Innovation" (PITE), both stimulated by FAPESP. In this aspect, CBMEG houses a unit of the Brazilian Company for Industrial Research and Innovation (EMBRAPII), the EMBRAPII Unit for Biopharmaceuticals and Medicinal Products / CQMED - Center for Medicinal Chemistry Open Innovation.

Besides research, CBMEG is also active in providing services in practically all areas of genetics, not only in the execution, but also in the training of technicians and researchers specialized for insertion in the labor market in this area in Brazil.

Thus, CBMEG always seeks to achieve its goal of offering to the local community and to society as a whole, high level basic and applied science, and teaching excellence.
